A busy few days and bam it's training night at the GOL again.

Subject: Leadership / Reaction to contact

Subject Overview:

As part of training as an NCO, we're addressing basic squad leadership skills in a limited foot patrol exercise.

A secondary focus on individual level is how we react to unexpected contact, as a squad we need individual members to emphasize survival over the instinct to return fire right away.

It's up to the NCO to strike the delicate balance between defense / survival on one hand, and employing fire & manoeuvre to close with and defeat the enemy on the other.

Thoughts:

The night started out with the usual banter and pre-op moulding to get us organised, "comms check, channel 1?" "Lima Charlie!"

The session this week was focused on Joe Malley (one of our NCOs) getting some more squad leadership experience in a small but challenging live fire foot patrol scenario with two fire teams at his disposal. The GOL try and share the experience round and get everyone using similar procedures and tactics so were all on the same page when the shit hits the fan, important if you intend to keep your squad alive, you never know when you might be called upon to lead due to casualties or non attendance. We also used the session to test out one of Oksmans scripts, a "hunt" script which essentially gives the enemies the ability to report your location to other teams in the area and co-ordinate an attack on you, the solution, keep moving!

Joe was given his starting position and three waypoints to hit, the route/strategy was up to him. A bit of guidance was provided to Joe and his teams in the form of key points, those being from a leadership point of view, Formations and Manoeuvres, Fire and Manoeuvre, his Intent, information is king, everyone needs to know the plan! From the grunt point of view we were there to provide Joe with teams to work with so our focus was simply to take cover and stay alive should we come under attack. This exercise was about SL'ing in the combat zone not how to get your dead comrades back into the AO.

We set out into the AO via the glorious tool of teleportation which got us to where we needed to be quickly.

Joe led us out in a travelling formation using the low ground to the West of the training area on a pre-planned route through what appeared to be an old riverbed, the fireteam leaders deciding to go column due to it being fairly narrow. We moved up like this till we were parallel with the first waypoint then set up in a squad line facing it. We had a line of walls to our quarter left which Joe noticed and pushed Alpha onto, Bravo had a bit further to push to get to them so Alpha provided over-watch while they made there bound, then the first shot was heard. Alpha and Bravo appeared to have two contacts one from in a nearby treeline and out to Bravo's East, both were dispatched fairly easily. Joe pushed us on.

The session continued like this for the normal hour that we train each week and at the end we had a 5 minute chat to discuss how everyone thought it went, the trainer starting with any points they wanted to highlight followed by the fire team leaders, the feedback giving Joe and the teams themselves some things to take on-board and hopefully taking some learning away from it.

These sessions while simple looking are very interesting and enjoyable to take part in, they build team dynamics and play a big part in building a cohesive ARMA unit.
